SHANGHAI food has come to town through a takeaway serving authentic dishes.

Helen Yang, from Shanghai, set up Little Shanghainese as a small takeaway service from her home in Prudhoe this month (April).

She runs the takeaway independently and cooks everything fresh to order, so customers must book in advance.

Helen said she set up the business after she cooked for friends to celebrate the Spring Festival, also known as Chinese New Year.

"I cooked some of my food for them, especially spring rolls. They were very surprised, they had never tried spring rolls like these. They said 'it's amazing and you should sell it'. That's why I set up my business," she said.

Soup dumplings are another of Shanghai culture's famous foods. Helen hasn't returned home for five years and said she misses the food she enjoyed back home. 

"Here has lots of Chinese food that's nice, but it's not my home city food. It's Chinese food, not Shanghai food. That's why I would like to bring my Little Shanghainese food to Western people."

Her menu includes pork with spring onion in rich soy sauce, pork soup dumplings, spring rolls, steamed seabass and pancetta sausage with pak choi rice.

"Shanghai food is famous for rich soy sauce," Helen said.

Most of the food is handmade and takes time to prepare. 

"If my friends want some, they order one or two days before so I can prepare the ingredients. I can't take too many orders."

She accepts individual orders every half an hour and only on Monday and Tuesday from 5pm until 7pm.

"You steam them, you cook them, it takes time. That's why I only take small orders every half hour."

To order pork soup dumplings, Helen advises being within a 10-minute drive or walking distance to her home as they taste best fresh. 

"I want to make good quality food, as fresh as possible for my clients. You can get frozen soup dumplings in a Chinese market, but you can taste the difference.

"Everybody's feedback has been amazing," she said.
