COUNCILLORS have welcomed the proposal of bringing ultrafast broadband to Tynedale towns.

The proposed Virgin Media works will bring evolved fibre broadband to Prudhoe, West Wylam and Ovingham.

The UK's fastest available broadband will be accessible to households throughout the areas.

Work will begin on April 24 and continue until approximately the end of September or October.

Construction crews will work on roads, footways and footpaths to bring ultrafast broadband to the area.

Councillor Gordon Stewart, who represents Prudhoe South, said: "This will be welcomed by so many people in the area, I have had discussions with numerous residents and businesses over the need for improvements to the service, I have taken the concerns to the county council broadband team who have worked on this project, including attending an event in the town."

"Prudhoe is now a modern town and this will help improve the service for families and those working from home," he added.

Hexham MP Guy Opperman said: "I am delighted with this news. After working with Cllr Gordon Stewart and Northumberland County Council, the service will improve connectivity in Prudhoe.

"I will continue to work with the county council and the Government to deliver faster connectivity to our county."
