A STAPLE of the Wylam social calendar is returning.

Wylam Summer Fair is back on June 24 after a four year break due to Covid and uncertainty around finding volunteers to host the event.

The fair attracts around 2,000 visitors to the village with commercial stalls and entertainment.

For the first time, a 60-strong rock choir will play at the event with their take on modern classics. It will join traditional favourites like Prudhoe Community Band and other local groups.

'Golden oldie' events like the junior and senior fun run will also return this year alongside Hexham Sword Dancers' egg and spoon race and tug of war.

Tradition dictates that the fair be opened by two of the village's oldest residents and a trio of the youngest.

The popular event, which has a new committee behind it, supports the maintenance and development of the Jubilee Field used by cricketers and footballers.
