A SQUASH club is welcoming new members.

Hexham finished the season against title chasers Chester-le-Street.

Captain Jeremy Phillipson started with a strong performance against opponent Tom Beresford. Jeremy took a close first game 13/11 and kept ahead for most of the match. Accurate volleying by Tom levelled the game 2-2 and just claimed the match 11/8 in a close final game.

Veteran Adrian Alderton had a good run against Ben Storey. Three of the games went to tie breaks before the enormous reach of Ben and youth won the day 3-1.

Damon Watts put up a stirling effort against Nick Hill just losing two close games, but pressed on to take the third 12/10 with some epic rallies. Nick managed to find his touch shots in the final game for a 3-1 win.

Kristen McCluskie stepped in as a reserve and struggled to find against Tom McKay.

And, Tom Ewen was unable to subdue the hard-hitting and accurate Tom Mitchell-Williams.

Chester-le-Street won 5-0 and is still in with a chance of the Division 1 title. Hexham nevertheless, put up a spirited and entertaining performance.

Hexham First team was unfortunately relegated from Division 1 of Northumbria's Squash Leagues. Although a tough season, Hexham was competitive throughout but was on the wrong side of too many 3-2 results.

There were many stand-out and determined performances from regular team members Tom Ewen, Damon Watts, Jeremy Phillipson, Adrian Alderton and Paul Satow, an end-of-season report said.

Captain Phillipson said: "I'm really proud of all the players who represented Hexham First team this year. We really enjoyed our squash, always remained positive and showed a great team spirit, which all bodes well for next season."

There were more successful performances at Hexham Squash Club, with the third team, led by Justin Barlow, winning Division 5. This gave younger players, including Tom Watts and Luke Radley, matchplay experience.

The Hexham Second team, led by Kristen McCluskie, finished third in Division 3.

Hexham Squash Club is based at Hexham Golf Club and is seeking new members of all abilities.
