FOOTBALL teams will take to the pitch in support of a Prudhoe food bank.

Prudhoe Town FC Legends will play Winlaton Veterans at Essity Park on Easter Sunday from 12.30pm.

More than 50 players will take part to help raise funds and gather donations for the Miner's Lamp.

The Prudhoe-based charity, which runs out of Eastwoods Park, also run a school uniform scheme and host community-based activities. It is also a warm hub working with Community Action Northumberland and operates a free Thursday lunch club and community cafe.

Chris Watkins, Prudhoe Town Football Club chair, came up with the idea with friends Ian Gardener, the Winlaton squad's manager, and Prudhoe's manager Chris Reynolds.

He said: "Half of these people haven't played football in 10 years. It should be a good day and a laugh."

Chris also explained that investment was being pumped into the club, including new dugouts, flood lights and a kitchen replacement.

"All teams are doing well", he added. "Especially the youth club seniors. The Sunday teams have a chance to win five trophies this year and the ladies team are doing alright and ejoying it."

The fundraising match has been supported by local businesses who have donated prizes for a raffle and Grants Butchers food van will be on site for the free event, followed by after-match entertainment.

Last year, the club threw its support behind Newcastle Boy Zachary Pearey who was diagnosed with an "embryonal tumour with multilayered rosettes" - a rare form of brain tumour - raising over £12,00 for the three-year-old.
