NEU Northumberland District secretary Alex Snowdon said: "NEU teachers have voted massively to reject an insulting pay offer from the education secretary. Ninety-eight per cent voting to reject the offer makes it clear that Gillian Keegan needs to do better.

We expect to be valued and paid fairly.

"We deserve parity with our teaching colleagues across the border. The Scottish government took negotiations seriously and the result is a better, fairer pay and funding deal for Scotland.

"We are also insisting that any pay offer is fully funded. The Government needs to invest in our schools.

"We will work with headteachers to avoid disruption to Year 11 and Year 13 students preparing for exams. We expect the strike action to make a big impact on schools.

"It is over to Gillian Keegan to make an offer that prevents further strikes being necessary."

In a turnout of 66 per cent, 191, 319 serving teachers in state schools in England voted to reject the offer in less than six days.

A list of striking schools is yet to be announced.
