A POPULAR Hadrian's Wall attraction is planning to install a solar-powered e-bike charging shelter in its car park in the hope that it will encourage more sustainable tourism.

The Vindolanda Trust is seeking permission from Northumberland County Council to install the shelter on the existing concrete pad within its overflow car park.

In a planning statement, the applicants said: "The existing cycle provision is poor, and often not utilised by visitors.

"The Vindolanda Trust is committed to improving sustainable tourism and proposes to upgrade the existing facility and accommodate e-bike charging, encouraging visitors to make sustainable visits to the attraction.

"The location of the concrete pad, to the south of the overflow parking area will not result in a reduction of car parking spaces or the loss of any trees."

The shelter, which will have a maximum height of 2.26m and be powder-coated green, would accommodate up to eight e-bikes, plans show.

There are also plans to install Sheffield Cycle Stands to provide further bicycle parking for visitors.
