THE funeral cortege of a former student will pass Queen Elizabeth High School (QEHS) before arriving at Hexham Abbey.

A service celebrating the life of Holly Newton, 15, will take place on Friday, February 17, followed by a private interment and wake after her tragic death to stabbing in the town centre.

Staff from the Whetstone Bridge Road school will line the route to pay their respects to the "truly lovely" student.

In a statement after Holly's death, the school said: "We are in shock after the terrible events of Friday evening and devastated at the loss of Holly, a truly lovely student who was quiet, conscientious, helpful and kind.

"Our thoughts are with Holly’s family at this time of unbearable pain."

The school will also be represented at the Abbey by senior and pastoral staff.

Students are also expected to attend the service to remember Holly, of Haltwhistle, where mourners are encouraged to wear purple - Holly's favourite colour.

Executive headteacher of QEHS and Hexham Middle School Graeme Atkins said: "Support remains in place for those who were close to Holly who need it and we're grateful to Northumberland County Council's educational psychology team."

Floral tributes have been left outside the school.
