A girl has raised more than £3,000 for her youth club in a bike fundraiser.

Rosie Bell, 15, from Ponteland, has completed her goal of cycling 22 miles with her sports coach despite never riding a bike without stabilisers and having cerebral palsy.

Rosie completed the challenge in just over two hours with her sports coach Jo Shallcross, who she came to for help with her condition four years ago.

So far she has raised £3,216 to help Denton Young Peoples Project Youth club in Newcastle upon Tyne, a club she has been going for many years.

Rosie started from Ponteland and travelled up to Stamfordshire before dropping down again to Ponteland passing the Blackbird Ponteland, where many stood and applauded her.

Rosie said: "It was amazing and I was really happy with everyone's support and the help of Jo - who helped me ride the bike.

"It was amazing to see everyone come out in the streets to watch and cheer me on.

"It was also great that my friend Olivia came out on the last few laps and joined in with me."

Bike companion Jo said: "She is our superstar.

"She wanted to do something to help the club she is and after many ideas we all decided a bike ride would be a great idea.

"The 22 miles came from the club celebrating how long the club has ran for.

"The only problem was to make sure Rosie was going to be ok on the bike and how it would work with her cerebral palsy but we managed to find a place where you could borrow tandem bikes.

"We went and tested it.

"The day wasn't without some struggles but it was all worth while seeing Rosie being successful."

Watching all the way of the route, parents Richard and Kerry watched their daughter beat the odds and raise money for the club she cared about.

Richard said: "It was very emotional to see Rosie overcome the many challenges on the day.

"We are very proud of her.

"I would just like to say thank you to everyone who helped her and supported her.

"Especially the youth club."
