Buyers and sellers at a car boot fair came together wearing purple to pay respects and contribute to the Holly Newton fundraiser.

One of the organisers of Hexham Car Boot Fair, Marlene Brunton, was overwhelmed with the community spirit and support of buyers and sellers who raised £250 towards the fundraiser of Holly Newton who was fatally stabbed in Hexham.

Marlene said: "A considerable amount of people were wearing purple at our car boot fair over the weekend to help pay their respects to Holly and her family.

"The idea came about as one of the young staff members of a stall knew Holly, as she attended the same school as her.

"Most of the other members of staff knew Holly's mam as well, so we felt we had to do something.

"It has had an impact on everyone and it has affected the community.

"Everyone has said it's so sad and it has been a waste of a young life.

"So on the day of the fair, we had two staff members at the front of the entrance with collection boxes and many people came forward and reached into their pockets.

"Some even folded money into it.

"We were shocked that we raised £250 for the fundraiser in just a couple of hours.

"It really does show how the people who come to the fairs support each other.

"They always support any charities we help such as Tynedale Hospice and other charities."
