A HEXHAM cat is making headlines abroad.

Yang Bell, the unofficial mascot of Hexham General Hospital, is well known in these parts but his name and picture is now being shared on front pages in Italy and on Australian tv.

The ginger feline, credited for boosting the morale of local people, tasted fame some years ago after a patient's now-viral text to her partner about Yang after recovering from surgery was shared online.

Yang, who has his own Facebook page, travels from his nearby home to the hospital most days to spend time with patients, staff and visitors. He was even present when former Prime Minister Boris Johnson visited.

The much-loved cat received a slew of gifts from members of the public for Christmas - some of which have now been donated to the Newcastle Cat and Dog Shelter. Presents included toys, treats, and blankets. Many had been embroidered with his name.

In October last year, Yang was commended by the PDSA with an animal 'OBE'. He was nominated by Alison Galilian, of Haydon bridge.

As part of the application process, hundreds of stories from members of the public poured in, describing just how Yang has helped them.

The coveted award recognises animals that display outstanding devotion to their owner or wider society, above and beyond normal companionship, and represent an exceptional example of the special relationship between animals and humans.

"It's just crazy for a cat whose mum was found in a snow storm", said his owner Glynis Bell.
