A spokesman for the NNPMRT explained a group of sea cadets from across the North East had been kayaking the River North Tyne on December 10, when the teen tipped out of their kayak and their leg became trapped between rocks.

The group with their instructors successfully managed to free the cadet and relocate him to Rescue Rock.

A call was then made to the North East Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust.

Before the ambulance crew reached the group, a request for Mountain Rescue support was made due to the likelihood of a difficult rescue.

Two response vehicles and members from North of Tyne Mountain Rescue Team and the Northumberland National Park MRT (NNPMRT) were deployed to assist.

The spokesman added that following initial treatment by the ambulance crew, the teams assisted with delivering further pain relief to the cadet, before their lower leg injury was immobilised.

The incident involved 26 members for three hours and 25 minutes.

As charities, the Mountain Rescue Teams rely on public support.
