"The Parish Council approached TRT for advice and help with trees along the river. We advised on a hedgerow to be planted between the arable field and the river to reduce any run-off and spray coming from the arable fields, reducing pollution in the river.

"Hedgerows in general are also wonderful habitats and provide vital wildlife corridors for animals.

"Over 500 hedgerow trees were planted on Saturday, November 26 and a further 1,000 will be planted in February. This work was done by the Tree Projects volunteers as well as TRT volunteers. The hedgerow is near Ovingham First School along the main River Tyne.

"There was bracken along this stretch which was becoming more dense and starting to outcompete other plants in the area, we worked to clear this for the hedgerow and to improve the biodiversity of the area," she said.
