Hexham Courant readers have responded to a refused planning application to install an array of solar panels on the roof of a Grade II listed building in Allendale.

This has caused many to become angry after they believe owners of houses are being 'stopped' from trying to be more environmentally aware.

Here is what was said by our readers.

Nick Pepper said: "There has to be a rational approach to sustainability.

"Owners of our aged housing stock even if it is scheduled or listed have to be able to consider the long term mitigations to manage an energy crisis which is not a flash in pan.

"Solar panels are removable, do not change the structure or integrity of the building.

"This decision has been made on aesthetics not practicality.

"Permission could have been granted with clear instructions on the nature of the installation.

"It is utterly ridiculous and a clear sign that despite the rhetoric councils have no real coherent strategy for renewables in our Northumbrian towns and villages all of which have an embarrassment of aged and listed buildings.

"It is time to face reality."

Anjelica Falterfoot agrees with Nick and adds: "Tell me about it."

Steven Bell also agrees with both and states: "Surely the owners of buildings where a planning permit is refused must be compensated when they are trying to install renewable energy systems.

Caroline Thompson Watson also brings up the point of how businesses are granted permission to add solar pannels and questions why it is different for house owners.

She said:"Does it surprise me? No Not at all.

"It's strange how some businesses can get away with it."
