A MILITARY historian from Hexham has released his latest book which looks at sailors' experiences during World War II.

James Goulty's new book, 'Naval Eyewitnesses: The Experience of War 1939-1945', focuses on personal experiences of individuals caught in war at sea.

Some were professional naval men while others were volunteers or conscripts.

The book looks at training, expectations, and aspirations, contrasted with the realities of service life.

Offensive and defensive roles are covered, along with convoy work, amphibious landings, coastal defence, minesweeping, anti-submarine warfare and naval aviation.

Emotional and graphic sections describe how it felt to be in action, impact of casualties, and survivors tales of how it felt when your ship was sunk by the enemy. The book contains a timeline covering major events at sea during 1939 to 1945.

"I'd like to thank everyone who was able to contribute, and I'd like to think that my book provides a fitting tribute to that generation as well as being an accurate record of their experience," said James. "Our nation owes a debt of gratitude to those who served in the Merchant and Royal Navy during the war."
