FORTY Northumberland pubs have been listed in this year's Good Beer Guide.

The Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) guide lists 4,500 of the UK's best pubs as scored by its members across the year.

Fifteen of the pubs in the county are new entries for 2022.

Twenty local breweries also made the list - two of which are new - while one brewery closed in Northumberland.

This year marks the 50th edition of the guide, which has a foreword by King Charles III, and celebrates the role pubs and staff played during the pandemic, pubs' place in British history and pubs' position as the hub of communities.

The North East section of the Cask Marque-sponsored guide is forwarded by author Laura Hadland.

"In Tyneside and Northumberland branch, we have over 700 pubs currently serving real ale and around 1,400 members regularly scoring the pints they drink across the year", said chairman Paul Hillhouse. "This gives us an amazing insight into what pubs are looking after the beer and offering beer in great condition every time.

"The publicans who make the cut each year have really worked hard and deserve the recognition that comes with a place in the guide."

CAMRA national chairman Nik Antona added: “We believe information gleaned from the guide is absolutely vital in the drive to save our pubs from closure and campaign for policies that better support pubs, local brewers and their customers.

"Whilst we experienced a boom in the brewing industry over recent years, it’s clear that the effects of Covid-19 and subsequent cost of living and cost of goods crisis has been keenly felt.”
