REDEVELOPMENT work at Newcastle International Airport will see its security area improved.

The work will increase the area's capacity and see new equipment and technology installed to ensure passengers can pass through without delays.

The project - which will also see new tiled floors, enhanced lighting, heating and ventilation, and improvements to walls and ceilings - will be completed in phases.

Phase one is currently underway and will be finished ahead of Easter 2023, while phase two will start in winter 2023-24.

All development work is expected to be completed by Easter 2024.

Nick Jones, chief executive of Newcastle International Airport, said: “We are delighted to be starting this exciting security upgrade to enhance the passenger experience at the airport.

"The project will see a transformational change to the area, and enable the team to operate with the latest equipment.

"Although a complex project, I am confident that whilst the works are ongoing, passengers will still be able to travel swiftly through security and onto their flight.”

This year, 98 per cent of passengers passed through security in less than six minutes, the airport said.
