A TYNEDALE school's new library has been officially opened by acclaimed author Anne Fine.

Over the summer holidays, a former resource room at Acomb First School was transformed into a library.

"There were resources literally up to the ceiling," said headteacher Hannah Williamson. "You couldn't see the windows.

"We've worked around the clock basically to try and get it all ready for the children."

On Friday (September 16), Ms Fine, author of well-known children’s novels including The Diary of a Killer Cat and Madame Doubtfire, officially opened the library, which was a surprise to the pupils, before she read to different classes.

She said: "To an author, it is always an absolute joy to open a library. This is bright, this is cheerful, and I've been told about what it was before so it's a remarkable achievement by the school.

"Without libraries, I would not do what I do. I could not do what I do. Most authors I know were absolutely dependent on libraries and it becomes harder and harder for children these days to use their public libraries because their hours have been cut. It becomes more and more important that every primary school does its best.

"When you think this is quite a small school, this is a stunning achievement and I'm absolutely thrilled to be part of its opening. The surprise on the children's faces says it all."

The library will be used as a space for reading, and pupils will be able to select their own books. There is also a small research area.

Miss Williamson said the library "means so much" to the pupils. The school had not had one since 2005.

"They haven't had access to books in the way that they get to choose their own," she said. "This now will totally change that.

"The promotion of reading is so important. Having a beautiful space will really help us to do that. We're really excited to get in and start using it."

Miss Williamson said she would like to thank Danny and Paul at D Hodgson Joinery for their work, as well as Sean Elliott Photography for taking the photos placed on the walls of the library.

She also thanked the school's staff and parents for their help.
