QUEEN Elizabeth II ascended to the throne on June 2 1953, and Hexham held many celebrations and events.

We looked back through our archives when Queen Elizabeth was coronated. 

From Saturday, May 30, there were nine days of celebrations in Hexham, but the 'moments of greatest joy of special historic significance will be reserved for Tuesday', the Hexham Courant said.

Local band, the Hexham Excelsior, performed concerts and Hexham welcomed the band of the 1st Battalion the Fifth (Northumberland) Fusilliers. 

The day of the coronation, Tuesday, June 2, saw sports on the Sele, an exhibition of wild flowers, arts and crafts, a children's costume ball in the Queen's Hall and a firework and bonfire display.

Golf, soccer and table tennis competitions took place, along with masked dances and treasure hunts.

Three days of prayer were held at Hexham Roman Catholic Church, where a Coronation Eve mass was offered, and services at Hexham Abbey.

Hexham dancing team Len and Molly Heppell introduced the popular new Queen Elizabeth foxtrot to town, at a Gala Dance in the Abbey Hotel.

A stone grotto containing a statue of Our Lady of Lourdes was unveiled in the garden of Hexham St Mary's Catholic School, dedicated to Elizabeth II.

Mr John Moore of Hexham saw his first Coronation at 90 years of age. He and 16 other old people living at Haining Croft, Hexham, hoped to gather round a television set, and sit down to a tea of ham, salad, ice-cream and fancy cakes.

Thurza Ebbs, a 17-year-old receptionist, was voted as 'Miss Coronation' of Hexham.

Winning her title for deportment, oratory, beauty and personality, Thurza also won a gown and 10 pounds, with nylons for runners up.

During Coronation Week, she had duties of attending local functions with Cllr Sam Wright, presenting prizes and congratulating winners. 

'Long may she reign', five nonagenarians said of Queen Elizabeth.

Hexham's oldest women had the same verdict to pass on Queen Elizabeth II. All five had seen the reigns of Queen Victoria, King Edward VII, King George V and King George VI.

On the day of the coronation, rain threatened to dampen the celebrations.

Hexham station master, Mr White, came to the rescue of Hollow Meadows and Hall Orchard residents, offering organisers the waiting room at the Railway Station to use for celebrating.

52 people enjoyed tea and party games. Mr White's wife presented beakers to the children, and every adult received a gift.
