A COUPLE are preparing to take on the challenge of the Cumbria Way in October to raise money for Breast Cancer Now.

Katy Wilde, 33, and her boyfriend Greg Irwin, 27, are walking the 73-mile route on October 9 and 10 with hopes of raising at least £500 for the charity.

The pair will be wearing as much pink as possible and the charity's t-shirts to show their support.

Katy said Greg is originally from Haltwhistle, while she has lived there for the last 10 years.

The pair both have children, and Katy says her children think 'she's a bit bonkers' in taking on the challenge.

She will do a bake sale at her childrens' school on Friday, October 7 to raise funds and says her children will help to prepare for it.

Katy and Greg are both full-time dry stone wallers and have previously done sponsored walks but 'nothing to this kind of degree', Katy said.

She said she had always been planning to do the walk since losing her dad to cancer when she was just 18.

"My best friend, who is the same age as me, found out just before Christmas last year she had breast cancer, she found a lump, and her mum also had breast cancer. Greg's mum had breast cancer as well, so it's a charity that's really close to both of our hearts," she said.

They will stay in Ulverston the night before the walk and then stay in Cockermouth with Katy's mum the first night.

"That's the half way point, and we'll get dropped off and continue on to Carlisle the second day."

Katy said the Cumbria Way goes from south to north, extending the full length of Cumbria.

"We've set a target of £500 but we're hoping to get a bit more than that. We've been spending time walking on Sundays, we did the Hadrian's Wall walk and we're doing Kielder this coming Sunday.

Katy said they regularly spend time walking in the Lake District so are already quite fit, and have done both Snowdon and Ben Nevis.
