A CLIMATE activist from Hexham was arrested after taking part in a protest against new oil projects.

Kate Bramfitt and other Just Stop Oil members blocked the entrance to the Shell Acton Vale Petrol Station in West London on Friday morning (August 26).

Just Stop Oil said 51 of its supporters disrupted seven petrol stations across the capital.

Some protesters rendered fuel pumps unusable by breaking display glass, covering them with spray paint and gluing themselves to them.

Demonstrators also blocked access to forecourts by sitting on entrance roads with banners.

The Metropolitan Police said it arrested 43 people on suspicion of offences such as criminal damage and highway obstruction.

Kate said: "I suffer from acute climate anxiety.

"I feel dread, confusion, anxiety, frustration, anger, grief and hopelessness around climate breakdown and the lies, greenwash and lack of urgent action from decision-makers. I worry a lot about the consequences for our children and us.

"I can't live with what I know and not act. I can't understand why fossil fuel companies are going to be allowed to drill for new oil and gas when everyone knows in their hearts and heads that the consequences of that will be catastrophic for us and other species.

"What are my teenagers going to think about how I responded when I knew the facts and saw the evidence?"

She added: "This climate emergency needs all of us to speak up now and demand in any way we can, an end to new oil licenses."
