THRILL SEEKERS will be able to see Newcastle from the sky this weekend.

It comes as part of the NE1 Summer in the City events programme which will see brave members of the public zip wire from the Tyne Bridge - one of Newcastle's most recognisable landmarks - to the Quayside.

The zip line, put on by North-East-based Jelly Legs, runs from August 19-29.

Twilight zips are available on select days from 7pm and 11pm.

More than 110 other activities have been laid on throughout the six-week, summer holidays for free - with this the only one to cost the consumer (£35).

Eighty-four free movies have also been shown at NE1’s Screen on the Green - the open-air movie theatre in Old Eldon Square - as part of the programme which closes on September 4.

“This is our first full summer post-Covid, and we have loved being able to welcome people back into the city, providing a packed programme of things to do and see", said NE1 director of communications Ben Whitfield.

"It has been an action-packed summer so far filled with activities for the whole family. From story-telling with BBC radio celebrity Alfie Joey, to painting tutorials and workshops on the Quayside, to yoga and HIIT classes.

"We really have enjoyed it all. And, now to top it off, we have zip wiring off the Tyne Bridge. This is the icing on the cake and the first time people have been able to zip-line from the Tyne Bridge in three years."

Courant reporter Georgia Langdon was part of a press pack to try the event (see video), which is from a height of 30 metres and reaches speeds of up to 30mph. Participants travel 250 metres over the river from the Gateshead side to the landing zone near Urban Garden.
