A YOUNG Hexham farmer is collecting his A-Level results today before starting six months work in New Zealand to support a future in agricultural engineering.

Will Bailey hopes his grades will secure him a place at leading agricultural college Harper Adams, in Shropshire, where he wants to take a BEng in Agricultural Engineering next year, after gaining experience overseas.

The 18-year-old, from Whitley Chapel, who has spent his summer working at a local farm in Hexham, will today find out his results in A-Level Biology, Physics and Economics before heading to New Zealand’s South Island in October to help on a large farm for six months.

He said: “I’m looking forward to getting my results and then taking some time to work abroad and develop my skills. Hopefully, I’ve done enough to secure my place at Harper Adams.”

Will has balanced his heavy involvement in farming with his academic studies at Dame Allan’s School in Newcastle, while also playing rugby for the Fenham-based independent school and completing his Duke of Edinburgh bronze and silver awards.

Will Scott, Principal of Dame Allan’s Schools, said: “A-Level results day is always an exciting and special day for pupils. Sharing in their celebrations and wishing them well on their next steps is so fulfilling after the intensity of the A Level years – and it feels even more important this year given the impact Covid had on their GCSEs.

“Will is a fine example of a young man who has a fantastic work ethic, both inside and outside the classroom. His clear passion for farming, coupled with his family background and wealth of experience, will ensure he continues to thrive in further education.”
