SPAR announced as headline sponsor for Wylam on Wheels

Spar has been announced as the headline sponsor of Wylam on Wheels organised by Wylam Sprockets Cycling Club.

The first-of-its-kind event on September 18 will see cyclists of all abilities tackle various routes - including couch to 25k, couch to 50k and a 60k challenger - to raise money for the Wylam Jubilee Playing Field.

Doug Bergstrand, owner of the SPAR Wylam store for almost 30 years, was keen to support the village event and make it a success with a helping hand from James Hall & Co. Ltd, SPAR UK’s primary wholesaler and distributor for the North of England.

Doug said: “It’s fantastic that SPAR has stepped up to sponsor the Wylam on Wheels event through James Hall & Co. Ltd, and by covering the events' costs, it will make a big difference to the village as all funds can go towards the playing field.

“I think it will be an occasion that brings the community together from Wylam and the surrounding areas after a long two years. I am also going to be riding the route myself and I am looking forward to the challenge.”

Cyclists will follow a fully signposted, marshalled route with feed stations along the course.

Sarah Grainger, of the Wylam Sprockets, added: “We’re very excited to put on a cycle sportive and we are looking forward to the big day.

"Entering Wylam on Wheels is a great way to keep fit, take in the stunning Northumberland countryside, and socialise at the same time.

“Importantly, the event is going to be the main fundraiser for the Wylam Jubilee Field this year which has lost out on any fundraising of note now for two years because of the pandemic.

"The field is the village’s jewel in the crown, and it costs around £10,000 a year to maintain for the benefit of the community, which makes SPAR’s support even more valuable.”

After completing the ride, cyclists can also enjoy an afternoon tea.
