NEW measures are to be implemented at the River Tyne after a teenager tragically died while swimming.

Robert Hattersley, 13, of Crawcrook, came into difficulty in the river near Ovingham during the UK heatwave.

After a large-scale search by emergency services, the body of the popular teen was found in the water.

The family of the former Thorp Academy pupil has appealed for more signage by the river, with uncle Darren Dominy telling the Hexham Courant signs should be on the bridge's legs where people enter the water warning of the dangers of open water swimming.

It comes as Cllr Angie Scott, a Labour shadow cabinet member for children's services on Northumberland County Council, is also calling for more signs.

An educational package is also being developed. Cllr Scott is working alongside Prudhoe Youth Services, local schools and planning to meet emergency services after she herself shared her childhood trauma of being pulled from the river. The package is to be set up to be agreed in the coming months.

Hexham Courant:

Cllr Scott said: “I am proud to be bringing forward this collection of measures that I hope will have a positive impact and prevent any family going through what the Hattersley family have.

"I have met with some professionals, agreed a plan of work and will closely follow it to ensure it takes place. This should have been done a long time ago but I am pleased to be the one to rectify it.

“I will also be visiting the educational sessions we have been working on together with Prudhoe Youth Project, schools and emergency services.”

In the wake of Robert’s death, thousands of pounds have been raised to help support his grieving family.

A fundraising event at Crawcrook Albion Football Club has been planned for September, as well as a memorial bench to be installed at Crawcrook Park. Any remaining cash will go to a charity of the family’s choice.

A memorial service, attended by Robert's loved ones, was also held on what would have been the Newcastle United fan's 14th birthday.
