LISTED building consent is being sought to refurbish windows in a Grade I listed mansion house.

The applicant, listed as Jacqueline Greening, is seeking permission from Northumberland County Council to refurbish selected windows to the south west elevation of Bellister Castle.

According to a design, access and heritage statement submitted alongside the application, the selected windows are currently in a "dilapidated and non-weathertight condition".

It added the proposed refurbishment would be on a like-for-like basis.

Bellister Castle, which sits along the A69 outside Haltwhistle, is a castellated 19th-century mansion house attached to the ruinous remains of a 14th-century tower house and is now owned by the National Trust.

In 2020, the Trust offered a 125-year lease to tenants for the Castle and Lodge as a private residence.

It had already been a leased residence for more than 35 years.

A window condition report also submitted alongside the application by Martin Johnson & Co said: "A process of refurbishment would greatly improve the operation and efficiency against draughts. Rusting should not be left to progress unchecked as this can cause damage to the stonework surrounding the frames.

"Missing/damaged window furniture should also be replaced as part of the refurbishment process."

Although Bellister Castle is not open to the public, it can be viewed from public footpaths that run through the adjoining woods.

Rumours have flown that it is haunted by the ghost of a musician who died on the land hundreds of years ago.
