A FARMER has 'paid his thanks' to hospital staff by handing over a cheque from his birthday fundraiser.

Denis Bulman, 70, of Simonburn in Northumberland, has handed a cheque of £1,325 to Hexham Hospital and the staff on ward four for all their help looking after patients in their care, including himself.

"I just wanted to thank those who helped me," Denis said.

"Ward four in the hospital is a strokes ward, which I was in.

"I was only going in for a hip replacement that day and I had a stroke during the operation."

"I was there for a few weeks but the staff was brilliant.

"I wanted to do something to thank them for the crucial work they do for everyone - not just me.

"That is when I decided to think of an idea to raise money for them on my 70th birthday ,which was in April, but I had to put on hold the celebration back due to the busy lambing season time for myself and friends.

"It was held at Hexham Mart and everyone had a great time.

"I decided that instead of asking for presents, I would ask anyone coming or who couldn't come to donate some money which would total to give the hospital staff.

"I was over the moon with the generosity of all my friends and family.

"I am pleased that I was able to show my thanks to them for what they did for me."

Angela Dodds, ward manager for Ward 4 at Hexham General Hospital, said: “On behalf of the whole stroke team on Ward 4, I’d like to thank Mr Bulman for his very generous donation. I’m so pleased that the care he received when he was admitted following his stroke was at the high level that we strive to provide for all of our patients.

“We have no specific plans for the money yet, but we will make sure that his donation is used to benefit the care and experience of future patients on our ward.”
