A NEW development in Hexham will be supported by a new long stay car park.

NCC has worked with developer Union Property Services Ltd. to redevelop the disused 'Bunker' site off Alemouth Road.

In the coming weeks, a new public car park will be open.

With 250 spaces and electric vehicle charging points, the car park will be operated as a long stay facility, helping to alleviate the pressure on Wentworth car park caused by vehicles parking all day.

It will stand alongside a 69 bedroom Travelodge hotel, Lidl store and McDonald's restaurant, and there has been significant work on the highways infrastructure to create new access into the site from the existing roundabout off Alemouth Road.

Councillor John Riddle, Cabinet Member for Local Services, said: "We're delighted the site is now well and truly open for business – it's created scores of jobs and will be a great boost to the town's economy.

"Soon the new 250 space car park will add a great deal more parking space in the town centre."

Hexham Central with Acomb Councillor, Trevor Cessford, said: "As the first person to have made contact with the previous owner, to see if the land might be up for sale, I'm naturally delighted to see the whole site having been fully redeveloped.

"The new hotel is something that Hexham has been needing for a long time now and the 250 additional parking spaces will be a major boost for the town."
