Two friends are hoping to raise money for two charities in all-day golf challenge of 72 holes across different venues in the North East.

Haltwhistle Jubilee Junior Football Club Welfare Officer Ken Williamson and his friend Paul Hewitson are to complete a 72 hole golf challenge for children's charities Whizz Kidz and Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

The pair will begin on June 22 at 4.30 am at Chester le Street Golf Club, then they will go on to Hexham Golf club at 9.00 am, Bellingham at 1.00 pm then finishing at Haltwhistle which they hope to complete the challenge by 9.30 pm.

Speaking about the challenge, Ken said: " The 72-hole golf challenge came about when my friend and I decided we wanted to do something to raise money for these two charities close to our hearts.

"We both are close friends with a family whose son Daniel Miller benefited greatly from the support of Whizz Kidz with an electric wheelchair during his life. Their support allowed him to have a greatly improved quality of life, and their work is life-changing for those they help.

"In the last year, through coaching junior football, I came into contact with a young boy called Alfie Barwick, who is fully committed to everything despite having type one diabetes. Alfie has had his life greatly enhanced by the work and support of Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

"Both of these young people have been highly inspirational to Paul and me, and we wanted to do something to help raise funds for these two fantastic charities. So, after some discussion, we came up with the idea of taking on this golf challenge.

"We want to thank all the clubs for their support, also Haltwhistle Jubilee Football Club and the Jubilee bar in Haltwhistle.

"Also, to all of those who have sponsored us to date and who are providing practical support on the day, anyone who wishes to support us can do so through our just giving page: Crowdfunding to Juvenile Diabetes and Whizz Kidz from a 72 hole golf challenge on 20th June 2022 on JustGiving"
