POLICE are investigating a burglary at a sports pavilion.
The pavilion in Acomb, which is currently undergoing refurbishment, was burgled at around 5.40pm on Friday (May 27).
A Northumbria Police spokesperson: “A group of offenders gained access to the premises and caused substantial damage, before leaving empty-handed.
“An investigation is ongoing."
Built in around 1973, the pavilion has served the village of Acomb for generations, acting as a changing facility for footballers at the nearby playing fields, and also housing a youth organisation.
It is currently undergoing a much-needed refurbishment with plans for it to become a multi-functional community hub.
The pavilion's roof has been fixed but the parish council is still looking for a contractor to finish the interior renovations.
Norman Robson, chairman of Acomb Parish Council, said the incident was 'frustrating'.
He said there has been damage to the door and the group moved items around inside.
"The door that was broken was going to be replaced anyway as part of the refurbishment," said Coun. Robson.
County councillor for Hexham Central with Acomb Trevor Cessford, who has contributed to the refurbishment scheme from his council member’s fund, added the incident was 'very disappointing' and 'not welcome'.
