A group of volunteer flood wardens has received training to be prepared for any future weather conditions.

Hexham flood wardens attended their first outdoor training session by the Environment Agency at Druridge Bay Boating Lake in Northumberland.

During the training, the group was shown some of the Environment Agency's heavy-duty pumping equipment that may be called on in an emergency and which can also sometimes work alongside the Fire Brigade's specialist equipment.

Organiser of the flood wardens Cllr Trevor Cessford said: "The session was also used to go through the procedures and practices with the Flood Wardens that need to be in place should the occasion ever arise.

"There are also details in the community flood plan for Hexham that have been worked on previously by myself alongside the Environment Agency.

"We also have the main contact for the area's flood plan which is Colin Hall."

John Docherty, one of the wardens who attended, said: "It was a great day of training. We were shown how to use the equipment and they also explained what our roles as flood warden would be."

At the moment Hexham has five volunteer Flood Wardens but would like to enlist the help of another four or five to cover.

The present Wardens are Trevor Cessford, Dawn Snowball, Stephen Ball, Ian Johnson and John Docherty.

If anyone else is interested in putting themselves forward please contact Trevor on 07375 056339 or tcessford1@outlook.com
