A club is celebrating a record number of membership applications to join since reopening after the pandemic.

Hexham Elvaston Bowling Club, on Elvaston Road, has had 20 new membership applications this year, in what is believed to be a record for the club.

Committee members believe the sudden interest is down to local people keen to get outside after Covid-19.

Club president Richard Hart-Jackson said: "Undoubtedly, our members will have been dreaming of fresh air, blue skies and the camaraderie of the club while locked down during the pandemic.

"Last year we were able to resume bowling with some restrictions, but I am certain that the influx of new members this season is a reaction to the constraints and a general feeling of the joy of being outside, in good company, participating in what is a very pleasurable activity."

The club charges £85 per year for membership with under-18s able to join for free. Those joining for the first time enjoy half-price membership.

Mr Hart-Jackson adds: It has been a difficult couple of years for everyone on Tynedale so it has been lovely to see old friends and welcome new ones too."
