Traders have been given the green light to still use an undercover market after the site was confirmed 'safe' following a crash.

Northumberland County Council said the undercover market in Hexham Town centre, known as the Hexham Shambles, on Market Place, is safe until repairs are made.

The incident last Wednesday was behind the shambles in the car park. A vehicle hit one of the columns of the 1766 historic structure.

Two traders were using the Shambles at the time but had to move to another section after a column supporting the structure, behind the traders, was hit. No-one was hurt.

A spokesperson from the council said: "We were on scene shortly after the accident and the site has now been made safe until repairs can be carried out."

It is unknown how much it will cost or when it will be repaired.
