1 Oceans, Haltwhistle 

With a total of 15 votes, Oceans in Haltwhistle was the most recommended place for fish and chips. "Oceans at Haltwhistle, can't beat it," one reader said. Another described it as 'unsurpassed'. Someone else recommended it for the team at Oceans Haltwhistle.

2 Paxtons, Hexham

Paxtons in Hexham received 10 votes. "Paxtons. Always fantastic and fresh." one reader said. "Paxtons every single time. Always delicious. Staff friendly and excellent value for money," another said. 

3 Acomb Sea Chef

Receiving eight votes was Acomb Sea Chef. One Google review said: "Delicious fish and chips, generous portions. Highly recommend, fantastic service from really friendly staff." Another said: "Lovely as always. Thank you. Highly recommend The Sea Chef."

4 Fountain Cottage Cafe and BnB

"Fountain Cottage Cafe and B&B every time," one reader said. Another said: "Definitely the Fountain Cottage Cafe and BnB, I've not had one better in a long time - the portion sizes are so big you struggle to eat it all."

5 Hexham Fish Bar

Located in Hexham town centre, Hexham Fish Bar was also widely recommended by several readers. Serving burgers, classic meals or chicken dishes, there's plenty of options to choose from.

6 The Golden Lion Hotel, Allendale

The Golden Lion was also a recommendation for fish and chips. "Popped in for a light lunch and was blown away by the effort put into the food," one Facebook review said. "Very reasonably priced for the quality and quantity of food. Will definitely be coming back." The venue is a traditional freehouse, boutique country hotel, restaurant and saloon bar, and specialise in a range of unique craft ales.

7 Sea Chef, Hexham

Also recommended was the Sea Chef in Hexham. "Sea Chef in Priestlands. Awesome," one reader said. The family owned business has been serving traditional fish and chips for more than 25 years. They also serve wraps, burgers, and a range of alternative seafood, such as battered king prawns, scampi and fish cakes.  

8 Haydon Bridge Fish and Chips

Serving everything from pies, kebabs, pizzas, and parmesan specials to traditional fish and chips, the takeaway also offer home delivery. "Haydon bridge chip shop. Best in the area," one reader said. "Haydon Bridge is excellent!" another said. 

9 Frosty's Fish and Chips

"Frosty's Fish and Chips are good when they come to our village," one reader said. The caterer travels around various villages and towns, including Gunnerton, Corbridge, Ovington, Great Whittington, Stamfordham, Fourstones and Newbrough. Serving fish and chips, chicken nuggets and chips, and battered sausages, they cook all their meals fresh and accept card or cash. 

10 Balls of Prudhoe

The family-run fish and chip shop offers a sit-down service in their restaurant and an outdoor seating area. The restaurant can be booked as a venue for parties with the option of a sit-down meal or a hot or cold buffet. "As a coeliac, these are the best fish and chips I have tasted. Huge portion, fresh white fish and the best crispy gluten free batter. Also deliver absolutely excellent friendly service. Highly recommended. Perfect Friday night tea," one Facebook review said.
