A BUS shelter has been damaged after a driver took and crashed a car before fleeing the scene.

At around 12.45am on Sunday, April 24, police received a report a vehicle had been taken from outside a premises on West Road, Prudhoe.

It was reported that at 12.30am, someone had taken the keys without the owner's consent and driven off.

The car later collided with a bus shelter opposite the Dr Syntax pub and the driver made off from the scene.

A spokeswoman for Northumbria Police said: "Enquiries are ongoing into the incident and anyone with information is asked to contact police via the 'Tell us Something' page of the website, quoting crime reference 047419V/22."

The bus shelter has been cordoned off.
