One review said: "What was outstanding for me was the staff, extremely friendly, very knowledgeable and also happy to help, even though at times the hotel, bar, and dining area was packed, they went around with a smile and still had time to talk to the customers."

The Bardon Mill hotel has a five star rating from 90 reviews. One said: "Immaculately clean with a great choice of in room drinks, hot chocolate and fruit, teas, etc."

1. Vindolanda

More than 2,000 reviews give the Roman site a rating of four and a half stars. 12.5 miles away from Hexham, it is regarded as one of Europe's most important Roman archaeological sites. "The remains of this Roman fort and village is amazing and they are still excavating," one review said.

2. Hexham Abbey

Nearly 2,000 reviews land the Abbey in second place out of things to do in Hexham. Built in the 7th century, the Abbey is one of the most prominent tourist attractions in Northumberland. "A stunning building with impressive, harmonious stonework and superb medieval painted wooden panels," one review said.

3. Walltown Crags

Built by the Roman Emperor Hadrian in AD 122, the remains stretch from Wallsend-on-Tyne to Bowness-on-Solway. One review said: "Remains of mile castles, turrets and forts dot the landscape throughout and it really takes you back to that time."
