THE RSPCA charity branch in Hexham has plenty of animals available for adoption, including dogs, cats, rabbits and guinea pigs.

They hope to encourage people to adopt animals in need, rather than purchasing a pet from a breeder.

Three year old Callie, a black and white lurcher, and 18 month old Fred, a white lurcher, have been inseparable since Fred was a young puppy and they must be rehomed together. Both are affectionate, playful and love going out for walks.

John Billany, an RSPCA Rehoming Officer, said Callie and Fred belonged to someone who left them unattended and were then taken into the charity's care.

He says the ideal new owner would have experience with dogs and have time to spend with them, having recently retired or working from home as they need a lot of attention and care.

"We want to give animals a second chance," John says. Adopting an animal rather than buying one gives rescue animals another chance to find their forever home.

Lassie, an older Border Collie, was rehomed but her new adopter was taken to hospital so she had to be returned. Lassie loves her toys, particularly squeaky toys and would make a loyal companion.

Kenzo, a 10 month old black cat, is a new arrival and has had a rough start to her life. She was sadly found by RSPCA inspectors with two dead newborn kittens and one mummified kitten still inside.

Sylvester was a stray cat found around Morpeth. He was microchipped, but sadly his owners didn't want him back and he is looking for a new home. Unfortunately, his eye couldn't be saved. He will be available for adoption after recovering from his operation. He is affectionate and loves attention.

As well as dogs and cats, the RSPCA also has guinea pigs and a lot of rabbits looking for new homes.

John says this is largely down to people buying rabbits during lockdown and getting rid of them once they returned to work, once they no longer had time to spend on the animals.

As the rabbits have been breeding, there is a lot more to rehome.

Despite not needing walks, John emphasises rabbits and guinea pigs still need caring for and handling to get used to people.
