THE owner of a cake company was 'thrilled' to have been asked to make a huge centrepiece for a historic celebration.

Graeme Venus, 48, of Sticky Sponge in Stocksfield, was asked by the Hadrian's Wall Trust to make a cake to help celebrate the 1900th anniversary of the Hadrian's wall.

He said: "I was shocked and felt privileged to have been asked to make a cake for the Hadrian’s Wall 1,900 Birthday.

"I have lived here all my life and so by making something for the event was amazing.

"The cake was a vanilla sponge with cream and raspberry jam in the middle. It took two-to-three days to make and had to be made a few days before the event.

"The event was a symbol of the first day of the celebrations and took place at The Great North Museum, although I had to leave before the ceremony, apparently they had a Centurion Roman solider made the first cut with his sword."
