A TYNE Valley village has been named one of the best places to stay in the UK.

Corbridge was ranked sixth in the homedit.com survey which took into account the number of Airbnbs, average capacity of people and the number of reviews.

Dave Crompton, chairman of Visit Corbridge, said it was very good news for the village. And as to why it’s so popular among staycationers, he had some ideas.

Dave said: “I think, first of all, the quality of shopping, dining and business is very good. The area’s local history and heritage also play a part. And it’s ideal for cycling and walking holidays.

“You’re in the countryside but you’re not in the countryside, if you know what I mean. People want the countryside, but they also want the extras that go with it – the nicer ones like the shops, the les restaurants and pubs."

But it’s not just among staycationers that Corbridge is popular. Local residents and day-trippers also benefit from its popularity.

Dave added: “The village is doing well in general. The bakers, greengrocers, butchers and gift shops are all doing well and that’s very good for us as a village. So when you come, you get the full package.”

Corbridge has big plans for the coming year to coincide with the 1900 Hadrian's Wall Festival, running from January to December, as Dave explained: "The normal midsummer festival that we have, everything will be Roman. The apple picking event will also be Roman. We are even having a Roman bakery.

"2022 is a huge year for us to strengthen the quality of a destination Corbridge is worth visiting!”
