PRUDHOE could soon have a new facility for young people in the town.

At Tynedale Local Council, it was announced an opportunity for fire cadet provision was being progressed.

Hexham, Alnwick, Berwick, Rothbury and Wooler all currently have Northumberland Young Firefighters' Association (NYFA) branches.

Coun. Gordon Stewart, who represents Prudhoe South and is also the deputy chair of the fire authority on Northumberland County Council, said: "I am keen to introduce the provision in Prudhoe as soon as practicable, we have a fantastic team of firefighters in the town and we could well end up with future recruits as a result.

"Young firefighters' schemes are very popular and offer a wide range of training of skills used within the service and also builds confidence, team playing and discipline. It is a unique experience which will complement the other youth opportunities available locally."

Coun. Stewart added: "Training is provided around a range of subjects relevant to young people in these modern times, not just helping them but also their families and the wider community."
