A MAN credited with giving young people their first experience of scouting has been presented with a top award.

Beaver scout leader Andy Turner, of the 1st Hexham Scout Group, has been awarded the Scout Association's Silver Acorn Award - one of the top accolades for adults in scouting.

He has held the volunteering position for over 24 years while also working full-time at the Beaumont Hotel.

Andy was presented the silver acorn, which is awarded after at least 20 years' service, by Adam Murphy, district commissioner for Hadrian District.

"This is the first time an adult in 1st Hexham Scout Group has been the recipient of this award which is very well deserved as Andy has been a committed and hardworking member of the team for over two decades and will have given hundreds of young people lots of fantastic memories", said Stuart Ford, group scout leader of the 1st Hexham Scout Group.

"We thank Andy for his continuing hard work."
