9. St. Cuthbert's Cave

The spiritual past of St Cuthbert's Cave is linked to the legend of ancient Lindisfarne monks laying St. Cuthbert's body to rest in AD875. Known locally as Cuddy's Cave, it is an overhanging outcrop of sandstone rock. Before it was consecrated, it was owned by the Leather family who used it as a burial place.
