A Hexham woman volunteering in Uganda is appealing for donations for an African education centre.

Yasu Fernández, originally from Spain but lives in Hexham is volunteering at a small children education centre in Uganda.

The 27-year-old is volunteering for a project called 'Goodlife Community Project Uganda', which asks for donations of money or school materials.

Yasu has had plenty of volunteering experience around the world but it is her first time in Africa. So far she has raised £225 raised of the £3,500 goal.

Yasu has now arrived in Africa and will be there till March 2022, she said: "Since I was 18 I knew I wanted to go Africa to help in a project.

"Life took me in different paths and in the past years I have travelled around the world and volunteered in different projects, but never in Africa, until now."

"I decided to come here because a friend of mine that lives near Allendale, recommended me this project.

The Goodlife Community Project was created in 2017, with the aim of providing free education to every child on his community.

During Covid-19, it has been used more so than ever with schools been closed since 2020.

She said: "Uganda has had a very long lockdown, with schools closed since the beginning of Covid in 2020, because of this Ugandan kids have lost so much learning, and when they don't go to school, they normally work.

"Luckily, in this island, the Goodlife Community school has been open and kids from the island have had the chance to continue studying during this difficult times.

Before leaving for Africa, Yasu sent out an appeal for school materials, to which she was pleasantly surprised with the results.

She said:" I don't know exactly how many items, but I can tell you the weight, 30kg of luggage!"

"I want to say thank you and that I wish they could see how happy the kids are with the things they received. Here they appreciate things a lot and they take good care of them."
