A new convenience store has opened in Hexham.

Mr. Ramalingam Thangavelu and Mrs. Pavithra Shiva, from Blyth, opened the shop 'Family Shopper' on 42 Priestpopple, Hexham on 11 December.

The company 'Family Shopper' allows individuals to own the business under the brand name. There are currently over 80 stores in the UK.

The opening event was well attended, despite the weather and was officially opened by Hexham Mayor Derek Kennedy.

Speaking about the opening day, Mr. Ramalingam said: "It was a great opening and it was lovely to be welcomed to the community, as we did not know anyone.

"We were really proud that we had the Mayor of Hexham come and open the store which helped advertise our shop.

"It was great to see the people of Hexham being interested in the business."

The couple opened the store shortly after moving from Blyth to Hexham, as the idea of opening a shop came to them when they could not find a store with items they needed.

Mr. Ramalingam Thangavelu said: "When we were walking about one night, we could not find what we needed.

"We also saw there was a big gap between shops and there was an empty premises which could be used for a shop.

"I have experience with running shops, so my wife owns it but I run it.

"It took a while to join a business family but we knew Family Shopper was the best for us."

Mayor of Hexham, Derek Kennedy opened the store alongside Santa said “We welcome the Family Shopper store to Hexham.

"We thank Mrs Pavithra Shiva and family for investing in the town and do hope this convenience store does well and makes a healthy contribution to the shopping offer Hexham has.

"It was nice to see lots of people attending the opening.”
