A HEXHAM school has been recognised as being one of the highest performing schools in the North-East.

Queen Elizabeth High School (QEHS) has been ranked second in Parent Power - The Sunday Times School Guide 2022 - top ten state secondary schools in the region.

Parent Power identifies the highest-achieving schools in the UK ranked by their examination results from 2017-19. Examination outcomes from 2020 and 2021 have not been used in determining this year’s rankings owing to coronavirus restrictions.

As well as assessment of all academic results on a school-by-school basis, Parent Power enables comparison between the performance of a given school with other schools in the same town, local authority or nationally.

Rankings in the secondary school league tables are determined by the average percentage of examination entries in the three years, 2017-19, gaining A* to B grades at A-level (which is given a double weighting) and the average percentage of entries returning 9-7 or A* and A grades at GCSE.

Hexham's Queen Elizabeth had 69.5 per cent of pupils receive A*-B at A level, 35.6 per cent at GCSE A*/A/9/8/7 and was placed 161 in the 2022 national rank.

"We are thrilled with the news and that the school community continues to be recognised for the hard work of the students and staff", said head of school Neil Seaton.

"At Queen Elizabeth High School, we have high expectations for all our students and offer a wide array of courses and qualifications.

"The continuing success of the school is based on the way all staff, students and families work closely together. The school ethos promotes respect, engagement, and aspiration for all."

Durham Johnston Comprehensive School was the highest performing state secondary school in the North-East.

QEHS, which is on the same site as Hexham Middle School, reopened its doors to pupils following millions of pounds of investment earlier this year.
