On an average, cold November windy day, unsuspecting Hexham visitors and residents saw a man come into town in his speedos.

Michael Cullen 'SpeedoMick' stomped into Hexham in nothing but his tight blue 'Everton' Speedos as part of his 2,000 mile tour of walking around the UK.

Although some were shocked to see a man in just Speedos, others recognised Speedomick and welcomed him to the town.

Members of the public beeped horns, shouted out car windows and some came up to him gave him money towards the charities he was fundraising for.

Michael started the tour in Stornoway in the Western Isles and is hoping to raise money for homelessness, mental health and funding towards disadvantaged young people, which is a very important and personal topic for Michael.

The 56-year-old Liverpudlian said: "I want to leave a good footprint on the world after many years of addiction.

"Luckily I had support and now I can say that I am 19 years sober and free from addiction, which has allowed me to do a lot of opportunities such as swim the English Chanel and helped him prepare to walk in just his speedos.

Mr Cullen adds : "This 'tour' is called 'SpeedoMicks Give back tour'. The point of it is to give something back to those who helped me when I was a my lowest.

"I lost everything because of the addiction but thanks to the help and support I got everything back. My family, friends and respect back.

Michael has been overwhelmed by the support he has received and said: "It is amazing to see everyone 'beeping their horns at me' and coming up to me to say they saw me on Facebook or even handing me money for the charities I raise funds for."

Michael has two weeks left of his 'give back tour'. Although he says it has been a great experience, there's one thing he is looking forward doing the most.

He said: "I can't wait to put my poor aching feet up and to be back home for Christmas to see my wife and my dogs."

Speedo Mick will be continuing his walk, with the next stop Allendale and other places in Cumbria but in two week time he will be back in his hometown to end his tour on the December 17.
