The Northumberland National Park Mountain Rescue team are warning the public to be extra careful after reports of snow covering tops of mountains and hills.

A spokesperson for the Rescue team said: "We are urging the public to be extra cautious as snow begins to appears on tops of mountains.

"The main things that we urge the public to do is to have the right clothes on for warmth but also to have the right experience for if and when more snow appears.

"We also urge the public to check out the adventure smart conditions on the website which can give expert advice. We also suggest to have the correct walking boots, emergency shelter, waterproofs. Additionally we advise that a tourch should be packed and that a mobile phone should not be relied on for light, as the cold weather makes the battery decrease quicker.

"We also suggest that the public should check the weather forecast to look at wind directions and to keep an eye on the temperaturses.

Finally, we also want to emphasise the importance that the public should have confidence that they can back-track from the direction they came from and to always let someone know where and where they are going and time frame they are to be out for."
