Police are stepping up patrols in a town after reports of a man approaching a 12-year-old girl.
The incident took place on Tuesday on St Helen's Street in Corbridge, when it was reported that a 12 year-old girl was approached by a man in what is believed to be a black taxi at around 4.30pm and asked if she needed a lift home.
The girl refused before leaving the area and police were then contacted.
A police spokesman said: "Officers attended the scene but the vehicle had left the area.
"We appreciate reports of this nature can cause concern and we take such matters very seriously.
"Enquiries are ongoing into the incident and extra officers will be on patrol in the area for reassurance."
