A community has been hailed after taking to the golf course greens for a great cause.

A staggering £3757 was raised for Prostate Cancer UK last Friday in the return of the annual Alston Moor Golf Club pairs open.

The event was supported by Play2Support, which was founded by Paul Nash to raise money and awareness for prostate cancer after his own diagnosis.

Paul Nash, organiser Play2Support said: 'I am the Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) representative on several Prostate Cancer UK funded research projects doing vital work on the diagnosis and treatment of the disease so I know the value of these fund raising events.

"This is the second year Alston Moor Golf Club has worked with Play2Support so given its success let’s hope we can do the same again next year."

This tournament brought a close to a week of fundraising and activities by people from the area donating over £1,000, more than 100 prizes and buying hundreds of raffle tickets.

The main donor and sponsor was R A Dalton & Co Ltd, Waste Water Specialists, whilst the pick of the prizes for the raffle was Sunday lunch for two at Walwick Hall donated by Dee Paisley, Pennine Environmental Services, and for the golf a day in the premier lounge for six people at Haydock Park Races, donated by Armstrong Aggregates, Shap Pink Quarry.

It was a close fought tournament but results are:

1 - Jonny Renwick and Mick Deadman with 47 points

2 - James Mutch and Jan Cardy with 46 points

3 - Simon Lee and Tom Cullens with 45 points

Michael Liverick, a long time club stalwart, said: "What a tremendous achievement by a small golf club to raise such a large amount for Prostate Cancer UK.

"Grateful thanks to all who donated money or golf and raffle prizes, and not forgetting the ladies for the all day buffet and the greens staff for presenting the course in such excellent condition."
