Northumbria Police are appealing for information following a fatal collision on the A1 yesterday.

A spokesman said: "At around 8.50pm police received a report of a collision on the A1 Northbound just prior to junction 75 (A69 junction) involving a dark coloured small hatchback car, a red motorcycle and a white Range Rover

"Officers and ambulance crew attended the scene but sadly the rider of the motorcycle had died.

"The dark coloured small hatchback which collided with the motorcycle initially stopped but then drove off from the scene in the direction of the West Road.

"It is believed that the vehicle sustained front end damage as a result of the collision."

The family of the motorcycle rider are being supported by specialist Family Liaison Officers.

The spokesman added: "A 36 year-old man and a 28 year-old woman have been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and remain in police custody at this time.

"The A1 northbound remained closed until 5.40am this morning for scene investigation diversions were put in place."

Police are keen to speak to anyone who may have been travelling in the area at the time and witnessed the collision or witnessed a vehicle matching this description or has dashcam footage, which can be submitted via the Tell Us Something pages on the Northumbria Police website.
